Woman Pays for Reporting a Rape

randomstabbing:

In 2008, an 18-year-old woman in Washington State reported to police that she had been sexually assaulted. But they didn’t believe her. Lynnwood Police Chief Steve Jensen said that her story changed, her details were inconsistent and that people who knew the victim expressed doubts about her story.

So the police charged her with false reporting, and she pleaded guilty under a deal that included a fine of $500. The charge remains on her record.

Three years later, Marc O’Leary was arrested in Colorado for charges of sexual assault, kidnapping, burglary and felony menacing. He is being held on $5 million bail. When the police raided O’Leary’s home earlier this month, they found photos of his victims.

The 18-year-old woman from Washington was in those photographs.

One day my daughter might come up to me and say, “Mom, I’m fat/ugly/whatever.”
And I will take her to the grocery store. I’ll show her all of the different sizes and shapes of her favorite fruits. And I’ll tell her, “Now, what’s more important? The way the fruit looks, or the way the fruit tastes?” And she’ll say, “Well, I guess the way they taste is more important.” And I’ll say, “That’s right. It doesn’t matter what size you are or how you look on the outside, as long as you’re sweet and delicious on the inside. Because you can be the prettiest looking apple in the whole store, but if you’re rotten on the inside then they will just spit you out.”

^ that’s a very good analogy

so remember kids
no matter what you look like on the outside
someone is still going to eat you

Last Week…

I (and my boyfriend) basically packed up everything I thought I’d need if I had to move to a completely new state in one night, in less than an hour.

What did I take? To name a few…

  • Small box of jewelry; I put on what was most important to me (antique turquoise ring, matching Tiffany’s necklace and bracelet)
  • Clothes, but only the ones I wore the most & just one bag (the blue Ikea bag)
  • My brand new Lita’s; I wasn’t about to leave those babies behind.
  • Photo albums
  • One small candle in a glass
  • Several hangers
  • Emergency pawning items
  • My stuffed Cougar
  • One belt
  • Our dirty laundry
  • Some cheap food (ramen, hot pockets)
  • My Ikea heart pillow
  • All the change from a little bag I put spare change in
  • The baby things we had (just two outfits, one pair of shoes and a toy)
  • Small bag of crochet yarn & needles (with new yarn I got to make baby things)
  • Journals (mine & his) and a book for each of us to read

We didn’t jump states, but we were at a different house for the week. We’re back home and I’m unpacking now.

It was really interesting to see what I really need and care about. Honestly it wasn’t much & I probably could have left more (clothes specifically) if I had to.

Some of it was weird or silly (two stuffed animals? really?) but I don’t care. Those things meant a lot to me. I didn’t use everything I brought, but we were only gone for a week (6 days, actually). It was a nice vacation and put a lot into perspective for us.

I kind of felt like I was packing for some apocalypse, because we were so rushed. But I definitely would have packed a lot less in that case.

What would you take if you just had an hour & a small car to put everything into?

You don’t have to get a job that makes others feel comfortable about what they perceive as your success. You don’t have to explain what you plan to do with your life. You don’t have to justify your education by demonstrating its financial rewards. You don’t have to maintain an impeccable credit score. Anyone who expects you to do any of those things has no sense of history or economics or science or the arts.
